Michigan State Univ. baseball coach Jake Boss in Jackson to help kids learn to play the right way
11-Aug-2011 When Michigan State University head baseball coach Jake Boss Jr. spoke, area youngsters listened at the Extra Innings-Jackson baseball training facility on Ann Arbor Road on Wednesday evening.
Boss was in Jackson headlining a one-day youth baseball clinic, and he did his best to share with the youngsters a few things they could work on to become better ballplayers.
“We want to give them some basic fundamentals, stuff they can take home and work (on) on their own,” Boss said. “And at the same time, we want to give them a little taste of the things that we do and why our program has been successful.
“We talk about playing the game the right way and paying attention to details.”
Boss, the third-year Spartans coach, led Michigan State to the Big Ten title this year. It was the first conference championship in baseball for the Spartans since 1979.
Boss is a Mid-Michigan guy, having coached in the high school ranks at Lakeview and Webberville. He was also an assistant coach at Michigan and a head coach at Eastern Michigan before taking the Michigan State job in 2008.
He looked right at home amongst the young sluggers in Jackson.
“There’s been a lot of good baseball around the area for a long time,” Boss said. “It’s an honor and a thrill for me to be a part of it, and hopefully to improve the game in the area.
“It’s a great game, it’s a fantastic area, and it’s exciting to watch these young guys come out and try to get better.”
Andrew Epstein, the Jackson businessman who opened Extra Innings earlier this year, was almost as excited as the kids in the clinic to have the Michigan State coach in the house.
“You can tell that he’s enthusiastic to get the MSU name out there,” Epstein said. “The kids got a lot of exposure to the coach.
“We’re very appreciative to have someone of his caliber come out.”
